A question I get asked from time to time is: What tools do you carry on long multiple day rides?

When I pack for a long trip, I think about what things will strand me if I can't fix them myself. I then carry the tools and spares to remedy those.

Tools and spares I carry include:
  • Stuff to patch tires or tubes (not pictured)
    • Tube patch kit (for tubed tires)
    • Tire plug kit (for tubeless tires)
    • Small 12V air compressor or can of Fix-a-flat
    • Small tire levers
    • Rim savers
  • Stuff to repair electrical wiring
    • 4' roll of electrical wire
    • Roll of electrical tape
    • Spare fuses
  • Spare hoses and clamps
    • Short length of 1/4" fuel hose
    • Short length of vacuum hose
    • Four hose clamps
  • Metric sockets
    • 8mm, 10mm, 11mm, 12mm, 13mm, 14mm, 15mm, 17mm and 19mm
  • Metric wrenches
    • 8mm, 10mm, 11mm, 12mm, 13mm, 14mm, 15mm, 17mm and 19mm
  • Small Cresent wrench (adjustable wrench)
  • Allen wrenches
    • 4mm, 5mm, 6mm and 8mm
  • Utility knife
  • Screwdriver set
  • Spare spark plugs, clutch lever and clutch cable (sometimes)
  • Spare headlight bulb
  • Zip ties
  • JB Weld
  • RTV (silicone) gasket maker
  • An assortment of spare nuts and bolts: I put these in a small zip-lock bag
    • A couple of 5mm screws and nuts
    • Some 6mm bolts with nuts and washers
    • Some 4mm, 5mm, 6mm and 8mm socket cap screws (with an allen type head)
    • 8mm bolts, washers and nuts
    • A handful of 1" long sheetmetal screws
    • A bunch of random washers
  • LED flashlight
  • An old medicine bottle full of extra ear plugs
It sure looks like a lot to carry but all of this fits in a Pelican 1170 case. If you have to slim down this list, the most important are the spare hardware, electrical repair stuff, the headlight bulb, the hoses and the zip ties. The goal is to be able to McGyver your way out of the middle-of-nowhere if you have to. You can pretty much fix anything with zip ties and JB weld.

So now that you've read what I carry, what do you bring along?
