Hi All,
I picked up a 1994 XJ600recently, this has been a real project with frame modifications, custom panels and a real scrambler style influence.
I have cleaned the carbs, installed new gaskets and O rings but have not brought any new replacement jets. I have also done a full service (air filter, sparkplugs, oil etc.).
I have replaced the vacuum fuel pump, rebuilt the petcock and have installed new carb boots as they were perished. The airbox has been cut (weird i know) but i have repaired it and have sealed it generously.
I can get it to idle rather high with choke and once given 5 minutes of screaming idle i can take it off the choke and have a moderately responsive throttle. The idle is still pretty high fully off the choke at around 2.5k RPM. Lowering the idle speed screw doesn't really help, the engine will lower down its idle but then just wants to die once i get to a "normal" idle speed 1-1.5k RPM.
I have noticed the revs jumping around quite a lot, its hunting for idle but i cant find why, I presume i have an air leak but I cant seem to find it. This issue happens with both direct fuel feed from an IV to the fuel rail and also with the normal vacuum pump via the fuel tank. The exhaust may not be stock, does this sound like I need to go up or down a size in jets or is this some sort of leak, maybe a new airbox?
Let me know what you think...
