I take quite a few longer trips and typically will carry my Tom Tom Rider with me when I go, in case I get lost or want to see where a road goes. One thing I've always struggled with is creating itineraries for it. It's clunky to create waypoints, etc, using the branded software that comes with it.
I've been using a UK based program, TYRE, which almost seamlessly integrates Google into my GPS. If you do this often, I'd highly recommend TYRE. Give it a try.
