Question about PMs

Sorry if this is not the right place to post this.
I checked the FAQ but could not answer my question.
I've sent a few PMs. They seem to get stuck in my outbox (vs. sent folder).
Some messages were there for a couple days, I ended up just deleting. Some stuck around for maybe 24 hrs then sent. What does this mean?
I looked through options in the control panel. The only clue I could find was a setting where if your inbox was full you could opt to delay receiving new messages until you clean it out. Maybe this is what is happening?
