Clutch Issue

Looks like I need to replace my clutch again ( only done 500 miles ago )
Cant seem to adjust it and she "clunks in most gears going up the box )
This time round, I am going to replace the cable, thrust washer and bearing and do the mod to the oil pump drive...
My last clutch was done by a friend ( I did'nt have a shed at the time ) and he noticed
that if he pulled on the clutch basket ( he did'nt remove the basket ), there was a small amount of play.
He could pull & push it about 1/2 a mill....
Is this normal ? if not, what could the problem be ??
