downhill riding/ braking question

So took the bike out for a quick run, my usual out to Point Reyes. Coming back I was working a twisty section and crested the hill with plenty of speed (too fast) and came into a much sharper set of 5 turns. I managed to partially break before the first turn hit, with the new lower speed I wasn't able to engine brake, had used about as much forward brake as I dared, and was still over my comfort zone. I touched the back brake it started to skid, I thought it might, so I Iet off the brakes, reapplied the front brake and white knuckled it out. I've always felt out of sorts going downhill.
SO the question is:
Do you change your stance or the way you set the bike in a turn differently when you're headed downhill?

BTW Fall finally hit here. here's a nice shot from earlier today
