Carb Issue

Hi everyone,
I am creating this post to look for feedback on a problem. It began happening in November right before storing my '96 for the winter. As I was riding, it felt like a chamber failed to fire. It only happened a handful of times (on separate rides). It was not regular. Each time it happened, the bike lurched backwards by the decrease in engine drive. It happened for one engine cycle and then compression immediately started up again and I kept going. A few months before this, the engine completely died during a ride and would not start back up. I took it to the shop and the mechanic found a "stuck" diaphragm in my fuel system. He said it was not in the carbs, but actually in the petcock or something. He also identified some cracks forming in my carb boots. I am assuming that the problem I experienced in November was due to the cracks in the boots propagating (probably worsened by colder weather).
Anyone have any thoughts on this?
I plan on doing a carb cleaning on my own for the first time this spring. If anyone has an o-ring kit, I'd like to buy one.
I am also uncertain as to how deep of a cleaning job I will have to do. I have ridden this bike for 3 years now since the last carb cleaning and have not had any issues until that described above.
