Melted Petcock

The fuel petcock on my '97 XJ600 appeared to be in good shape, until I pulled it off to rebuild it. The aluminum has disentigrated along the area around the inlet. Any ideas what happened here? Corrosive mixture in the fuel tank? Oxidation??
