Petcock and fuel pump question

After sitting for 7 years, should I assume I need to rebuild either or both of the said items? Any way to test before installing? (I've already done the kazoo thing on the pump...I found out I have absolutely no musical talent whatsoever...even while trying to play a vacuum)
