How many links?

So my chain adjusters are at the end of their limits and the chain is still loose, even though I installed new chain and gears at the end of last summer. I'm going to buy a chain breaker tool tonight. My question is this - after moving the axle back to the full forward position, how many links should I remove to get back to an adjustable length? My thought is at least two, but I wonder if the full range of adjustment is equivalent to a 3-link range. Any one have experience with this?
