I'm terrible at leaving things in restuarants, cafes, museums and even filling stations - all as a motorbike rider, I think what happens is that one partially removes gear, like maybe looking at a map book, taking off a neck warmer, inner gloves, neck brace - that sort of thing then it somehow gets left behind, sometimes through carelessness and anoither time through distraction. the biggest thing I lost was a mobile phone that I left behind, I was able to recover that but it meant cutting short as journey to retrace my steps.
