Carb balancing issues

I attempted to balance the carbs on my 2002 XJ600N but had issues with the gauges. Now the engine is running at 4k and the idle screw is all the way out. I've tried nalancing the carbs using a piece of wekding wire down the throat. I screwed the idle adjuster in until the wire was just movable and then set the other carbs to match. I now have a calibrated set of gauges but I'm still getting a the highr RPM issue.
Those who have mechanically balanced your carbs, where did you set the idle adjuster when you did it?
