CDI-related question

Good afternoon,
I'm helping my friend out with his 1992 XJ600S. His bike suffers terribly from intermittent ignition and backfiring. We know the problem is electrical because sometimes the ignition fuse is blown and the next afternoon it rides just fine until it doesn't. Extensive troubleshooting according to Haynes indicates that the CDI is the likely culprit. For funsies I plugged my 1999 CDI and, unsurprisingly, it doesn't work since the circuity is different post 1997 facelift (TPS sensor and such...)
So we're looking to buy a second-hand one from before 1997. My question to you is.. Are all pre-1997 CDI's created equal?
On the back of his it says 4BR-00 28J. But online I see different marques, such as 4BR-00 4Y7, 4BR-00 1ZD, 4DU-00 2XW and so forth.
I wouldn't want to make the mistake of buying the wrong one.
I know I don't need the 4BR-10 because those are post-1997 (like the two '99 ones I have in my possession).
I suspect the CDI because we checked the following:
- Signs of physical damage on wiring harness
- Checked each terminal for corrosion
- Resistance of ignition coils (both primary and secondary)
- Resistance of spark plug caps
- Continuity of ignition switch, emergency button, sidestand switch, neutral switch, pickup coil
- Running voltage from the rectifier
- Visual verification of spark on the plugs when cranking
Thanks in advance esteemed gentlemen
