Hi all,
I have a ‘98 XJ600 and I am having a strange issue with the idle, bike starts first time on choke and will idle off the choke at around 1200 rpm.
However, once the bike is warm, if I rev it, then the idle sticks at around 3000rpm - at this point the idle adjustment screw does nothing, I can unwind it and take it out, and there is no effect on the idle speed, however, if I forcibly roll the throttle the wrong way (about 1mm off where it sits naturally) the revs will drop back to 1200. If I let go of the throttle after this, then there is a 50% chance the revs pick back up and 50% it stays idling normally.
Sometimes, the idle problem will just occur on its own whilst the bike is just sat idling on the drive for 10 mins or so, so not sure if it is related to the throttle cable.
I have recently cleaned and rebuilt the carbs and not sure if I have messed something up - I have tried to balance the carbs (I think they are set) but it’s difficult because if I put too hard on the adjustment screws then the idle problem also occurs.
Outside of this, the bike seems to ride absolutely fine, no coughing or spluttering, plenty of power - just have to manually “push” the throttle when stopped at junctions to avoid sounding like a hooligan!
