Blocking oil cooler with inline ball valve

Hi, my XJ 600 N came with an oil cooler. I don't like that the oil takes forever to heat up. After inspecting the original Yamaha sandwich adapter I discovered it has a spring-assisted bypass valve that would open if the oil cooler was blocked. I came up with the idea of just installing an inline ball valve before the cooler. This way I could just keep the valve closed unless the oil gets really hot. Since there is a bypass valve there shouldn't be any issues. I wanted to hear your guys opinion on that. Will it put more strain on the oil pump if it has to constantly pump against the bypass valve? Did I miss anything?
