I made an adapter which screws to the back of the FZ1 tail light and bolts to the XJ using its stock bolts. I hope I got a photo of that. Nope. Well, here's the model. I 3d printed it, 'cause, why not:

This aligns the tail light almost perfectly inside the rear of the '97/'98 tail fairing. The FZ1 light is about 1 3/4" narrower than the XJ light so I made a pair of infills to take up the gap, again, 3D printed, and again, here's the model.

Wiring wise, it was simply a matter of snipping off the wires from the XJ tail light and soldering them to the harness for the FZ1 light. Wire colors are the same between the two.
Here's the light all buttoned up. I like how the shape of the light matches the swoop of the tail, at least, on the '97 tail.
The only thing I need to sort out is what to do about a license plate light since the FZ1 light doesn't accommodate it.
