OK... Oil leak at cylinder base gasket. In order to replace I need to remove cylinder which means taking pistons out. I've heard that anytime pistons come out of cylinders you are supposed to get new rings and hone the cylinder. Is this really the case?

If rings, pistons, and cylinders are all in spec can I just put it back together? Same piston in same cylinder, etc?

Engine only has 12k on it, good compression, runs great. Gasket just deteriorated from age.

What do you guys think? I've found arguments both ways on different sites. It seems to me that rings will move around piston and find their sweet spot over time. They've already mated with cylinder walls. Maybe just wishful thinking considering outrageous cost of new rings.

Thanks.
