Here's Yamaha's official word, taken from the '94 owner's manual, regarding fuel and octane rating:
If the octane is calculated using R+M/2 method, then 86 octane or better is to be used. If the octane is calculated using the RON method, than 91 or better octane is to be used. The calculation method should be shown on the pump aside the octane rating sticker.
