Now that we're starting to see our first chilly weather here in NYC I'm looking at options for keeping my hands warm. In my experience while bicycling, heavily insulated gloves don't work well in 15-30 degree weather because eventually the outside material freezes and because your fingers don't touch each other they have no way of warming up.

So, I'd like to try some mittens this year, but I don't see many options for split-finger mittens. Is this because they don't offer enough articulation to handle throttle+brake & clutch action? An example of what I'm looking for is http://www.backcountry.com/craft-therma ... -glove?ti= although those don't offer the necessary protection for motorcycling, I might still pick them up for general outdoor use & bicycling.

What are the best options you guys have used for cold weather? Since I'm in the city my bike lives on the street, so something that I can easily put on and take off the bike is a plus.

Are warming hand grips essential?

I'm also considering something like this to keep the wind off my hands:
