Been a couple of weeks now into my tracker project, got the the bike stripped down and done the frame mods necessary to change the looks. Turned my attention to the engine for a change and have a question for those of you with the know how.
Mine is a '92 and on the right hand crankcase (end of crank) there is a rubber bung in between the top and bottom casing in line with the end of the crank, it appears to be leaking oil and before I go and dig it out I thought I'd better find out the ramifications of doing so.. I notice on later models a screw on cover is used instead. So do I have to split the casings to put a new one in? or is there an easier method?
Any advice would be much appreciated. Jimmy

It's a lipped seal. It's made of steel and coated with rubber. To properly remove it, you have to split the cases and pop it out just like the crankshaft seal. Yamaha does sell two versions of it, though, one with lip and one without lip. So if you managed to get it out, you could drive in the one without the lip.

The later engines have a cover but beneath that cover is the same seal.

This is what it looks like behind that seal:

Here are the P/N's for the seal, both lipped and without:

And this is how that seal fits into the crankcases:

Thanks for the comprehensive reply Radare, good to know the set-up in there.
Its now just parked itself into the too hard basket pending checking the rest of the motor for other issues. Could be better to get a second hand motor as this one has done 125,000 kms and is likely to have more problems...
