rubber bung at right hand end of crankshaft

Been a couple of weeks now into my tracker project, got the the bike stripped down and done the frame mods necessary to change the looks. Turned my attention to the engine for a change and have a question for those of you with the know how.
Mine is a '92 and on the right hand crankcase (end of crank) there is a rubber bung in between the top and bottom casing in line with the end of the crank, it appears to be leaking oil and before I go and dig it out I thought I'd better find out the ramifications of doing so.. I notice on later models a screw on cover is used instead. So do I have to split the casings to put a new one in? or is there an easier method?
Any advice would be much appreciated. Jimmy
