Carbs adjustment

Post by taavikaarid » Sun Jul 09, 2017 2:37 pm

Hello,

I intalled these pods (sort of)(for practical reasons) on my XJ600 51J (1989):

They fit well on her and since I'm not looking for an extra performance, I didn't mind losing the stock airbox. Just need some advice to get it working properly.

After the upgrade it appears that she doesn't like full choke, she just stalls regardless of the temp. Half choke works well and the performance is not bad as well. The exhaust also smells a bit fuelly. Does this mean that she is running rich since the pods do not allow enough air to pass or is it something else?

Is it possible to tune the carbs to take this into account or rejetting is required?

Thanks for your advice.

We don't recommend running pods on the later-model XJ's because of a lack of fuel atomization. It is possible that the same thing is happening with your 51J. Do you have adjustable needles in that bike? And what main and pilot jet sizes are you running?

The carbs are stock and I couldn't tell if the needles are adjustable. Since I doubt that the previous owner made some upgrades on the carbs, I would assume that the needles are not adjustable (assuming that the stock carb doesn't have pre-fitted).
Main jet is: #1 and #2 - 105; #3 and #4 - 102.5
Pilot jet is: 70

Thanks!
