So my starter seems like it's seen better days. No compression plugs pulled it spins. But with plugs is falls on its butt lol. That's with fuel off so not flooding. When I grab the starter nose gear it spins freely both ways. Will the rebuild kit repair that or will I need to get a new used starter.
Motor was locked up. Marvel mystery oil did the trick. Soaked for a couple weeks. Now spins nice by hand and no plugs. Was looking for the rebuild thread but can't find it. Gotta see y it's not starting with switch but I'll use a screw driver if I have to. Working on making it naked. Gauges are my next project once it's running right.

No. The ratchet part of the starter is built into the starter gear inside the engine. To repair that, you'd have to split the cases.

The gear inside is good. Cranks over fine plugs out. Plugs in its bogs down

The ratcheting mechanism allows it to spin one-way, not spin the otherway. There are two gears inside the crankcase which allows the starter to turn the crankshaft. Damage to either gear, even slight, can result in a starter issue. I saw this on my Scrambler when working on it; gear teeth bent but not broken, causing a cyclical bind.

Here's how the gear should work. Note the two gears that turn
