How-to: Change your Seca II's Engine Oil

Image

One of the most important and easy maintenance items on the Seca II is changing the oil. This is how you do it.

How often should you change your oil?
Yamaha recommends changing the oil every 4000 miles. That being said, we recommend that you change your oil at the start of each riding season. If you ride the bike aggressively, in stop-and-go traffic, or during cold weather, we recommend you change it every 2500-3000 miles.

What type and viscosity of oil should I use?
Yamaha recommends Yamalube 20W40 or 10W30. Yamalube 20W40 is no longer available; a suitable alternative is a motorcycle-specific 20W50.

What you need:
  • Three (3) quarts of motorcycle-specific or non-energy-conserving engine oil of the appropriate viscosity.
  • Yamaha oil filter (P/N 3FV-13440-20-00), (HiFlo HF-303) or equivalent
  • Drain plug crush washer (P/N 214-11198-01-00) or 14mm copper washer
  • 17mm box-end wrench
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Oil drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Four (4) Yamaha exhaust gaskets (P/N 4br-14613-00) if you need to remove your exhaust

How to change your engine oil:
1. Start your Seca II and let it warm up. Take it around the neighborhood and get the engine warm.

2. Park your Seca II on a level workspace (garage, sidewalk, etc) and let it cool down until the exhaust system is cool to the touch.

3. The oil drain plug is located on the underside of the engine, immediately between the exhaust headers.

4. Place your drain pan beneath the drain plug and remove the drain plug. Approximately 2 1/2 quarts of oil will drain from your engine and into the drain pan. Let the oil drain until it no longer drips.

5. Install a new crush gasket on the drain plug and install. Tighten to 31 ft-lbs. Do not over-tighten.

6. Move the oil drain pan beneath the oil filter and remove the filter. If you have an aftermarket exhaust or need more access to the filter, remove your exhaust using an 8mm hex-socket. Remove the oil filter and allow the remaining oil to drain into the drain pan.

7. Wipe the oil-filter adapter clean with fresh paper towel. There should be no dirt, debris or other gunk anywhere near the oil filter adapter.

8. Fill the new filter with oil and wipe the filter's seal with oil. Carefully thread the new oil filter into place and torque to 12 ft-lbs (or tighten hand-tight).

9. Install the exhaust with new gaskets, if you removed it in step 6.

10. Place the bike on its center stand (if equipped) or have a helper support it so that it stands upright. Use a funnel to add oil to the crankcase through the fill plug until its at the top of the engine's site glass when the bike is level.

11. Start the engine and let it idle for a few moments. Ensure that there are no leaks at the drain plug or oil filter.

12. With the bike level, add oil through the fill plug until it is at the top line on the site glass.
